Spyglass claims Melissa Barrera was fired from ‘Scream’ because her rhetoric ‘flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech

Spyglass Media Group initially declined to comment after Variety reported that the business had fired Melissa Barrera from the cast of “Scream 7.” However, the production company behind the reboot of the hit horror franchise is now denying a narrative that has swiftly emerged around the decision: that Barrera was sacked for expressing support for the Palestinian cause. A spokeswoman instead clarifies that Barrera’s posts were construed as anti-Semitic.

Spyglass Firm Stance Against Antisemitism

“Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,” according to a spokesperson for Spyglass.

Melissa Barrera On Israel And Hamas Terror Attacks

Following the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attacks and Israel’s subsequent attacks on Gaza, Barrera has been posting about the conflict on Instagram, resharing posts accusing Israel of “genocide and ethnic cleansing” and one from Jewish Currents magazine accusing Israel of distorting “the Holocaust to boost the Israeli arms industry.” Following the posts, Spyglass promptly severed ties with the “In the Heights” star. Barrera was set to star in the upcoming “Scream” film after anchoring the fifth and sixth installments in the previous two years.

Barrera is no longer represented by a publicist. Variety has reached out to Barrera’s manager for comment.

Christopher Landon’s Statement on Barrera’s Departure

Filmmaker Christopher Landon, who is set to take over directing duties on “Scream VII” after Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett left after leading the franchise revival, initially issued a statement on Barrera’s departure, though his post on X/Twitter has since been deleted.

Barrera’s Instagram Statement on Seeking Palestinian Perspective

Barrera allegedly stated on her Instagram Story, which was referenced in the post and circulated on social media after the revelation, “I have been actively looking for videos and information about the Palestinian side for the last 2 weeks or so, following accounts, etc.” Why? Because Western media only portrays one side of the story. I’ll leave it to you to figure out why they do it.”

“Everything is bad. Please, no more yelling. “This was not my choice,” Landon wrote.
